Google rankings swing again on 20–21 and 24 October

SEO trackers and the community reported strong ranking volatility on 20–21 October and again on 24 October 2026. Google has not confirmed an update for these dates.

What to do: Don't react to one bad day. Compare a full week in Search Console, and check whether drops are site-wide or limited to a few pages before changing anything.

Google's September 2026 spam update finished after almost 14 days

The update started on 24 September 2026 and Google's Search Status Dashboard listed it complete on 8 October 2026 — about 13 days and 16 hours, its longest spam rollout so far and the fourth spam update of 2026. Google did not say which spam tactics it targeted.

What to do: If traffic fell between 24 Sep and 8 Oct, audit thin or mass-produced pages, expired-domain or third-party content on your site, and paid links. Improve or remove them rather than tweaking titles.

ChatGPT

ChatGPT ads arrive in India — self-serve from ₹725 a day

Ads reportedly went live for Indian ChatGPT users on 27 August 2026, and the self-serve ChatGPT Ads Manager opened to Indian advertisers on 4 September 2026. Coverage reports a ₹725 minimum daily budget, no invite or insertion order, and two campaign types: Reach (CPM) and Clicks (CPC). Ads show to logged-in adults on the Free and Go plans only.

What to do: Test small (₹725–₹2,000/day for two weeks) with one clear offer, track leads not clicks, and keep investing in organic AI visibility — ads appear in only a minority of answers. Plan your budget →

Search Console

Search Console now shows your AI Overviews & AI Mode impressions

Google introduced Search Generative AI performance reports in Search Console on 3 June 2026, showing impressions in AI Overviews, AI Mode and Discover's generative features. It launched UK-first and later expanded; at launch it showed impressions but not clicks or queries.

What to do: Open your Performance report and add /ai to the end of the URL to see it. Track which pages earn AI impressions and give those pages clearer, answer-first intros.

Google: optimising for AI search is still SEO — and AI Mode passes 1 billion users

In May 2026 Google published guidance stating that appearing in AI Overviews and AI Mode relies on the same SEO best practices — no special AI file or markup required. At I/O 2026 Google said AI Mode has over a billion monthly users and is expanding to nearly 200 countries. The May 2026 core update ran from 21 May to 2 June.

What to do: Don't chase AI 'hacks'. Strengthen the basics AI reuses: crawlable pages, clear answers, schema, fast mobile pages, and trusted mentions.
